Master's degree program "Medical Life Sciences"

Biomedical studies in an international environment

Medical Life Sciences is an English-taught Master program at the Faculty of Medicine at Kiel University. It focuses on teaching students the ropes of biomedical research to prepare them for future careers in biomedicine worldwide. Studying Medical Life Sciences, students concentrate on one of three current research fields: In the focus areas Inflammation, Oncology or Evolutionary Medicine they can investigate major scientific topics in depth. In Inflammation, research of the Cluster of Excellence PMI is explained and discussed just as well as students are introduced to the biomolecular principles and clinical aspects of chronic inflammatory diseases. In their project and Master’s theses, students are integrated into ongoing PMI projects and gather experience in conducting research themselves. The program has been teaching translation of basic-research results into clinical practice from its start in 2012, when professors from the predecessor Cluster of Excellence Inflammation at Interfaces and other faculty members launched Medical Life Sciences.

The concept of integrating translation "from bench to bedside" into a Master program works: Many graduates pursue their interest in biomedical research as PhD students; others opt for graduate positions in biotechnology companies or the pharmaceutical industry.

Applications for Medical Life Sciences are open to Bachelor graduates in life sciences as well as to those who have completed a medical degree. Under certain conditions, it is also possible for CAU students of medicine to study Medical Life Sciences in parallel after successfully completing the ability assessment.
