An important goal of PMI is to transfer the findings from fundamental research to the clinic, which is why the focus is on clinical studies. This applies in particular to Proof-of-Principle studies, which build on the work already done in PMI and its predecessor cluster "Inflammation at Interfaces".
The pivotal points for clinical research in the PMI Cluster are the two Comprehensive Centers for Inflammation Medicine (CCIM) in Kiel and Lübeck, two large interdisciplinary outpatient clinics for chronic inflammatory diseases.
The universities in Kiel and Lübeck, together with the University Medical Center Schleswig-Holstein (UKSH), founded the governance structure Precision Health in Schleswig-Holstein (PHSH). PHSH provides the organizational framework to professionalize and accelerate patient-centered research in precision medicine.
The promotion of clinician scientists plays a central role in the Cluster of Excellence PMI. The cluster supports both young clinicians during their specialist medical training as well as already established clinical researchers (Senior Clinician Scientists).
