PMI at the Kiel week

From skin to intestine, from molecular biology to precision medicine. From 22-26 June 2024, visitors were able to discover inflammation research at PMI cluster’s stand at the Kiel week. Using a microscope, they became researchers themselves and examined their oral mucous membranes and oral microbiome. Playing the computer game "Dr. Präzimed", they were able to slip into the role of a doctor and set out in the quest for the correct diagnosis.

On Sunday, 23 June, Dr. Sascha Rahn, Johanna Saalfrank and Dr. Tim Hollstein presented their research at the PMI Science Show in the Seeburg. Further presentations by cluster scientists dealing with microbiome (Dr. Corinna Bang), ancient DNA (Prof. Ben Krause-Kyora), skin inflammation (Prof. Regina Fölster-Holst), and artificial intelligence in medicine (Dr. Joana Bernardes) rounded off the PMI program. On 25 June, researchers from Cluster of Excellence PMI and Roots, as well as the Kiel Marine Science priority research area, took part in the Science Slam. Dr. Tim Hollstein talked about "The Cake Paradox".

Science along "Holtenauer"

On Saturday, April 20th, 2024, approximately 30 scientists and researchers from Kiel's universities and research institutions gave exciting insights into their research in 18 shops and businesses along Holtenauer Straße. Prof. Fölster-Holst gave a lecture on the "Influence of the environment and climate change on our skin" and Dr. Corinna Bang spoke about the role microbiomes play in the development of chronic inflammatory diseases. Dr. Mareike Wendorff also presented the PC game she developed, "Dr. Präzimed", where users take on the role of a doctor in the quest to find the right diagnosis.

The event was made possible in cooperation with the municipal science authorities, the KielRegion, and Die Holtenauer e.V. association as part of the Festival of Science.

"EXPLORE Precision Medicine", Berlin

On 9 October 2023, the BMBF-funded research network e:Med, in which numerous PMI members were also involved, hosted the EXPLORE Precision Medicine event. More than 400 pupils, students and interested members of the public came to the Futurium in Berlin to immerse themselves into the world of precision medicine. More than 60 scientists and other stakeholders provided an insight into the wide range of topics from this exciting field of research.

The Cluster of Excellence PMI was represented by several scientists, who gave lectures and other presentations. At the interactive stand, artist Saleh Shaweesh from the Muthesius University of Fine Arts and Design also presented the virtual reality experience Supernoid, in which visitors were able to immerse themselves in an artificial world based on microscopic images of intestinal tissue using virtual reality glasses - a result of the art cooperation between the cluster and the Muthesius University of Fine Arts and Design. At the same time, Dr. Florian Tran provided further insights into research on intestinal organoids. Using the PC game Dr. Präzismed, visitors were able to take part on a quest to find the correct diagnosis for a virtual patient with inflammations. Dr. Joana Bernardes explained the secrets of single-cell sequencing to those interested. And the presentation from the Statusplus test person portal clarified the many things that can be deduced from genome analyses in particular, and what can be learned about the state of one's own health.

Science Day 2023

On 29 September 2023, the Science Day took place again in Kiel as part of the European Researchers Night. The universities and scientific institutions from the Kiel region invited visitors to discover, experiment and learn. KielRegion counted over 14,000 visitors at the 12 locations. At the Science Center, the PMI Cluster of Excellence has set up the "Dermatopia ", where children could playfully learn more about skin and skin diseases. In addition, the artist Saleh Shaweesh showed the result of the art cooperation between the PMI cluster and the Muthesius Academy of Fine Arts and Design: A virtual reality experience based on microscope images of intestinal tissue gathered from cluster research.

Science Day is the highlight of KielRegion's year-round Science Festival and part of the European Researchers' Night.
