PMI school program
Health and chronic diseases affect everyone. In addition, more and more people are diagnosed with chronic inflammatory diseases, often at a young age. Nevertheless, these topics are only covered to a limited extent in standard school curriculums. This is why the Cluster of Excellence PMI is committed to bringing this knowledge to schools. At the same time, the cluster aims to promote interest in scientific and medical research.
In order to achieve this, the Cluster of Excellence PMI, together with the Leibniz Institute for Science and Mathematics Education (IPN) and the Partner schools Stiftung Louisenlund and Hebbelschule Kiel are developing a school curriculum covering basic topics such as "What is chronic inflammation?", "Prevention through nutrition" or “Stigmatisation through disease", while at the same time addressing the latest research topics. When developing the curriculum, a co-design approach is adopted in which scientists from the PMI cluster and educational researchers (IPN), teachers and pupils work hand in hand to utilise all competences, while taking into account various interests and needs.
As of summer 2024, lessons on microbiology, induction, MRI and the importance and function of models in medical research have been created and are currently in the extended testing phase. The development is accompanied by quality tests (can you say a little more about this? What does it mean?)
Teachers who are interested in implementing the project in their classroom are invited to contact Mareike Wendorff.
The long-term goal is the development of a continuous, interdisciplinary curriculum for normal classroom instruction. The topics presented aim to create an understanding and awareness of preventative health care, e.g., through healthy eating, to prevent the stigmatisation of illnesses, but also to arouse the pupils' interest about unresolved research questions and state-of-the-art technologies. To ensure successful outreach to other schools, the PMI cluster is also working with the Institute for Quality Development in Schools Schleswig-Holstein (IQSH) and the MINT Academy SH within the framework of the project.
Lehrkräfte, die Interesse an einer Durchführung in Ihrem Unterricht haben, sind eingeladen sich bei Mareike Wendorff zu melden.
