MoreandmorepeopleinindustrialnationsaresufferingfromchronicinflammatorydiseasessuchasCrohnsdisease,psoriasis,diabetesandrheumatism.IntheClusterofExcellencePrecisionMedicineinChronicInflammation(PMI),scientistsfromvariousmedicaldisciplinesandfundamentalresearchareworkingtogetheronaninterdisciplinarybasistosignificantlyimprovethediagnosis,treatmentandpreventionofthesediseases.

Mission

ThemembersofthePMI wanttoestablishprecisionmedicineinchronicinflammation,whichtakestheindividualityofapersonandtheirenvironmentintoaccount.Clinicalstudiesandtranslationareatthecoreofthiswork-fundamentalresearchresultsshouldbetransferredasquicklyaspossiblefrombenchtobedside.

Organization

Around400researchingcliniciansandscientistsfromvariousdepartments,fromfundamentalresearchandthehospitalaremembersoftheClusterofExcellencePMI.TheyelecttheSteeringCommittee,thecluster'sdecision-makingbody.ThiscommitteeissupportedandadvisedbytheScientificAdvisoryBoard.TheSteeringCommitteealsoelectstheExecutiveGroup.

TheGermanResearchFoundation(DFG)ClusterofExcellence"PrecisionMedicineinChronicInflammation"(PMI)isbeingfundedwithatotalof52.5millionfrom2019to2025throughtheGermanExcellenceStrategyasoneof57collaborativeresearchnetworks.

TheExcellenceStrategyisafederalandregionalfundingprogramtostrengthencutting-edgeresearchandtheinternationalcompetitivenessofGermanuniversitiesforthelongterm.PMIisoneofthelargestclustersofexcellencewithamedicalfocus.
